Killing Brumbies - “A Third World Practice"

Killing Brumbies - “A Third World Practice"

Several trusted sources have confirmed that Victorian Government agencies last week begun culling brumbies in the Alpine National Park at Cowombat Flat in the High Country.

The Bairnsdale Advertiser has been told ten vehicles drove into a closed area of the park via Limestone Road last Wednesday to begin the cull.

Information on the Parks Victoria website indicates various track closures in the Alpine National Park and a “coordinated deer and feral animal control program in parks and reserves across Eastern Victoria”.

Peter Sandy, of Buchan, who spent 16 years celebrating Christmas with his family at Cowombat Flat before it was declared a national park, described the brumby cull as "inhumane and senseless".

"At this time of the year, there would have been many young foals about," Mr Sandy said.

“It's a third world practice to go and shoot animals and kill them."

East Gippsland Shire councillor, Sonia Buckley, who a few months ago successfully moved a motion in the council chambers to oppose the shooting of wild horses in the High Country, said she was "personally disheartened at the government's actions to ignore humane options".

“I'm disgusted at the cruelty”, she said.
