Delivering safe and smoother roads for the Eastern region

A key freight route in Bairnsdale is now safer and more reliable thanks to the State Government’s $100 million Fixing Country Roads Program.

The intersection of Bosworth Road and Forge Creek Road received a $232,600 upgrade that saw 1800 square metres of road rebuilt on this critical rural freight link.

This B-double approved route carries over 2900 vehicles each day and services the region’s agricultural and manufacturing industries - including one of the state’s largest fresh vegetable distribution facilities.

A further $252,000 has also been invested to seal eight gravel roads across East Gippsland, along with line-marking and signage to improve safety: Tarra Street, Metung; Fisher Street, Lakes Entrance; Lawless Street, Bairnsdale; Patterson Lane, Orbost; Lanteris Road, Wy Yung; Fischers Lane, Wy Yung; Phillips Lane, Lucknow; Howletts Road, Nicholson.

The upgrades have been fully funded under the first round of the State Government’s Fixing Country Roads Program, which provides grants to rural and regional councils to undertake local road projects.

“We’re helping councils to deliver stronger, safer and more reliable local roads through our Fixing Country Roads Program,” Member for Eastern Victoria, Jane Garrett, said.

“Our investment is ensuring the local road network remains safe and fit for purpose for East Gippsland residents, businesses, and the agriculture and manufacturing industries.”

“The investment into the road pavement reconstruction at the intersection of Bosworth Road and Forge Creek Road is welcome news for our important freight sector supporting major local industries and employers,” East Gippsland Shire Council mayor, Cr Natalie O’Connell, said.

“The sealing of eight gravel roads will also be welcomed by residents and businesses, improving safety and enhancing dust suppression.”

In round one, all 48 councils across country Victoria secured funding with delivery of 91 individual projects on track for completion by June 30, 2019.

The significant funding boost for local roads is on top of the biggest road maintenance blitz regional Victoria has ever seen, with $333 million being invested this year to repair, rebuild and resurface more than 1500 kilometres of country arterial roads – creating more than 650 construction jobs.
