All maxed out: Max hangs up his ferry tools

All maxed out: Max hangs up his ferry tools

Max Curtis has now retired after 23 years of maintaining the Raymond Island Ferry.
Max, very much a local bloke, was born in Orbost but later came to the Clifton Creek and Granite Rock area onto a dairy farm with his parents.
Max left school in form two to help his dad on the farm, but went back to school (night school) to gain his welding and mechanical qualifications.
At one point Max topped welding school in Victoria and later went on to teach welding locally for 22 years.
Max has seen the current Raymond Island Ferry pulled from the water 10 times while he has been maintaining it over the past 23 years. During its out-of-water stints the ferry is painted, anti-fouled and mechanically checked.
With Max retiring from the ferry maintenance program, East Gippsland Shire, according to Max, has appointed Stewart Delaney as the person responsible for the smooth operation of the ferry into the future.
