Greene Street victory

Greene Street victory

Residents of Greene Street in Bairnsdale have scored a victory with East Gippsland Shire Council voting in unison against a proposal to allow road access from the street into a proposed residential subdivision.
Council had received more than 100 objections from residents, not only in Greene Street, but the immediate neighbourhood, objecting to plans to create a new road to access the surplus land behind the new Kmart building on Main Street.
While the majority of local residents aren't opposed to the proposed 11 lot residential subdivision, they had been vocal in their opposition to creating a new road from Greene Street, which would require the removal of an existing residential home, opposite the neighbourhood park.
They have instead insisted access be via Calvert Street, with a road running behind the Kmart building to the surplus land.
Shire chief planner, Martin Richardson, acknowledged that council is obliged to consider objections from residents when considering planning applications. Mr Richardson, in response to a question from Cr Sonia Buckley, agreed "trucks would be coming and going with concrete" up Greene Street if the  road access was approved, creating dust and noise.
