The fight to retain tranquility

The fight to retain tranquility

A picnic meeting of residents from Greene Street in Bairnsdale, and adjoining avenues, was held on Thursday evening to unite in opposition to proposed plans to carve out another thoroughfare in the tranquil neighbourhood.
Developers want to remove an existing residence at 29 Greene Street in order to  access surplus land behind the property which is proposed as residential development.
While most of the residents have no objection to the proposed subdivision, which is situated behind the new Kmart build, they do object to a road being bulldozed into the environment which would give road access from Greene Street to the subdivision.
Greene Street is a narrow street which boasts a spectacular park overlooking the Mitchell River.
Its tranquility and peacefulness is undisputed and residents often gather in the communal park to hold family gatherings and celebrations, or just to sit quietly and recover from an overwhelming day in life.
Locals believe creating a road off Greene Street to access the proposed subdivision would destroy the community amenity of the area.
It would also impose an intersection with the park, which many believe could put neighbourhood children at risk who regularly walk or cycle to the area, along with elderly residents from the nearby nursing home, who amble down to the green space to enjoy some time alone.
