Justice for First Nations

The Yoorrook Justice Commission was in East Gippsland last week to meet and yarn with First Nations Elders in Lakes Entrance and Lake Tyers as part of Australia's first and only formal truth and justice process.
Led by chair, Professor Eleanor Bourke, the Commission will investigate historical and ongoing injustices and the continuing impact of trauma experienced by First Nations peoples since colonisation.
Professor Bourke said many Victorians have grown up "without knowing the story of what it means to be an Aboriginal person in Australia".
She said it was "important to correct the official record that exists that Captain Cook discovered Australia. Well he didn't".
"Terra nullius (nobody's land) was the most terrible lie ever told in this country,” Professor Bourke said.
