Centenary tournament on the horizon

One hundred years of golf at Bairnsdale Golf Club will be celebrated at the club’s centenary tournament, which kicks off on Monday, October 29, and concludes on Sunday, November 4.

Entries close on Monday, October 22, or when fields are full, so hurry to book your spot.

The tournament will be played on the club’s championship 18-hole course, overlooking the picturesque Lakes at Eagle Point.

Competition will begin with a men’s and ladies’ 18-hole stableford followed by an 18-hole ladies’ 4BBB stableford the next day.

On Wednesday there will be a 27 and 18-hole handicap and a 27-hole scratch for the ladies, while the men will play an 18-hole 4BBB stableford on Thursday.

A ladies’ four person ambrose stroke 18-hole scratch and handicap will take place on Friday.

The men will return to action on Saturday with a 27 and 18-hole handicap and a 27-hole scratch.

On the final day of play there will be a variety of mixed Canadian stableford handicap events and a mixed Canadian stableford scratch.

A prize of $10,000 is available for the men (8th hole) and ladies (17th hole) who get a hole-in-one on their first attempt during their respective days of play. A $1000 prize is also available for the first hole-in-one by a female and male competitor.

Full details and entry forms are available at the clubhouse on Paynesville Road, or on the club’s website.

There will also be plenty of fun to be had off the golf course with a ladies dinner and revue on Wednesday and mixed events on Friday and Saturday night. On Sunday a Melbourne Cup calcutta will take place followed by a barbecue dinner.

The program will be preceded by a centenary dinner to which all available former tournament champions have been invited.

The first day’s competition is arranged for all players to compete with them as a special event.

Chairman of the organising committee, Peter Wilson, expressed appreciation to the large number of club members who have been so willingly involved in organising, and will be the workforce that makes it all succeed.

On behalf of the club he also thanked the many local businesses and individuals that have provided their support to ensure a thoroughly enjoyable celebration and program of golf competitions.

Many local motels and caravan parks are offering accommodation discounts for visiting tournament golfers.

Mr Wilson thanked East Gippsland Shire Council for its support via the Regional and District Events sponsorship program.

“This has been vital in combining promotion of the event with invitations to golfers within and outside Victoria to visit and tour in East Gippsland,” he said.

East Gippsland Shire Council mayor, Cr Joe Rettino, said council was proud to support the centenary tournament.

“Council’s sponsorship program is designed to help facilitate and enhance events in the East Gippsland region. Events such as the centenary tournament are vital to East Gippsland as they provide direct and indirect economic benefits, along with the promotion of our area as a great place to visit, live, work and invest,” Cr Rettino said
