Bairnsdale Police have issued seven infringement notices to a group of people who were planning to stage a protest in Bairnsdale yesterday over the strict lockdown restrictions.

They have each been fined $1652 for breaching the Chief Health Officer’s (CHO)directive.

One man, a 46-year-old from Wy Yung, (pictured) who allegedly identified to police as a sovereign citizen and refused to provide his details, resisted attempts by police to arrest him outside the shire office and was tackled to the ground. He was also pepper sprayed.

An ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital for treatment at about 10.30am.

He’s been charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest as well as being fined for breaching the CHO’s directive.

A 41-year-old Wiseleigh man, who organised the protest on a public social media site, was arrested by police before the protest could even begin.

He’s been charged with inciting public disorder.

Police, who had been made aware of the planned protest, had been patrolling the Princes Highway in Bairnsdale in anticipation of trouble.
