Gunnai artist on a roll

Gunnai artist, Ray Thomas, was commissioned to paint his artwork on a Melbourne tram as part of the Art Tram project for 2021.
Mr Thomas, who spent many years in East Gippsland, but now resides predominantly in Thornbury, was chosen to paint the third tram in the art series.
The tram painted by Mr Thomas began operating on tram routes 70 and 75 in Melbourne last week just in time for NAIDOC Week.
His stunning design, entitled Djeetgun Dreaming, features his granddaughter, Bryeesha, nicknamed Djeetgun.
“The gum leaves represent Djeetgun as she flutters through the undergrowth of the bush,” Mr Thomas said.
The artwork includes the female blue wren, which is the women’s totem for the Gunnai people of Gippsland.
