In a game best described as “of varying quality” that included many interesting plays, Sarsfield defeated Clifton Creek by just one point (under a unique scoring system) on Sunday, winning the glory and the Sandhill Ashes urn.
The bushfire recovery, community engaging event was so important that even ‘Swervin Mervyn’ Merv Hughes was there, coaching the juniors earlier in the day then joining Gippsland community champion and commentator, Craig Bush, at the microphone, both giving up their time to support the grass roots community activity.
Australia’s big-hearted fast bowler was a crowd favorite with the kids, coaching and encouraging them during the Masters Blasters clinic run by Meerlieu Cricket Club.
Merv also didn’t hesitate in joining in the spirit of the free lunch sponsored by Patties Pies by putting a few of them away.
Mr Bush, an Order of Australia Medal recipient, men’s health advocate and local farmer, delivered a ball-by- ball commentary of the match providing a fantastic level of engagement and laughter for those on and off the field.
Of the interesting plays, one batter sent their bat further than the ball and another hit a six, landing it on an outfield stubby. Clifton Creek captain, Jen Smith, said the atmosphere was buzzing and the event was really well attended.
“It was a fantastic event for both communities,” Jen said.
“Sarsfield may have won by a point, but community was definitely the winner.
“In all of this recovery there’s been a lot of pressure so it was good for everyone just to have some fun.”
