Bombers soar into decider

Boisdale Briagolong has emphatically booked its first East Gippsland Football Netball League grand final.

The Bombers powered away from minor premier, Lindenow, during a dominant second quarter at City Oval on Saturday, and were never headed, running out 38-point victors.

It was the Bombers’ first senior final since entering the competition in 2015.

Trailing by one goal at quarter time, Boisdale Briagolong opened the game up in a 20-minute period during the second term, led by coach, Josh Stubbe.

Stubbe – who was joined by brothers Daniel and Jordan among the team’s best – was the game changer when he swung himself deep into attack, drilling four goals in the space of 10 minutes to turn the game.

His one-on-one prowess was on display, but equally his team’s ball use was exceptional. By hand the Bombers created time and space, by foot they were lethal, led by the likes of Josh Hegarty and Hayden Burgiel.

Lindenow had no answers, and while it stemmed the flow somewhat in the second half, Boisdale Briagolong was in cruise control having opened up a 26-point advantage, which extended to 39 four minutes into the third quarter on the back of consecutive Jordan Stubbe goals.

Jordan Stubbe finished with five majors in a perfect small forward’ s game, while older borther, Daniel, was a brilliant lead-up centre half forward, forcing the Cats to swing Lachlan Dumaresq from forward to defence after half time.

The Stubbe brothers were excellent, as was athletic big man, runnerup league best and fairest, David McKean, he completed an excellent aerial game with a pack mark and goal in the final term.

It was a complete performance from the Bombers – Nic Campbell kicked two goals, Dylan Alexander was a major ball winner, Shaun Bates did some heavy lifting, while down back they had the match ups spot on. Darren Allen kicked three goals for the Cats, however Pat St John did outpoint him regularly in one-on-one contests. The Bombers also led the pressure stakes, laying bone-crunching tackles consistently.

Lindenow will be forced to do some soul searching. The Cats weren’ t potent in attack aside from Allen, while their defenders had no answers when under pressure. Fivetime league best and fairest, Luke Dyer, started well, however after quarter time his disposals were met with pressure. Coach, Justin Gould, worked tirelessly and finished with 31 possessions, however was lacking midfield support as McKean, Bates, Alexander and Josh Stubbe dictated terms.

It was the Bombers who got away to the hot start with Jordan Stubbe snapping the first goal in the opening minute.

Kane Ashwood answered for the Cats at the six-minute mark before a 50m penalty allowed Dumaresq to put Lindenow ahead.

A picture-perfect Burgiel pass set up Jordan Stubbe for his second at the 16-minute mark, some equally smooth work from Justin Gould, Kane Ashwood and Dumaresq allowed Allen to goal and put the Cats six points clear at the first break.

Early on it was Lindenow’s slow build up which unsettled Boisdale, however the tide would soon turn.

Hegarty marked a Lindenow rebound attempt three minutes into the second quarter and found Daniel Stubbe with a centering ball as the Bombers regained the lead.

A scrap in the gate pocket saw Campbell centre the ball to Bates who would hand off to Billy Marshall who locked in a seven-point lead.

Allen responded following a high tackle moments later, however the Bombers would soon start rolling.

Josh Stubbe began his dominant full forward period by marking a Burgiel sizzler at the 13-minute mark, and a minute later he would be on the end of a precise Hegarty ball for his second goal in as many minutes.

Two minutes later he was at it again, this time gathering a ground ball and snapping truly while being tackled. Suddenly the Bombers led by 19 and the pressure would continue mounting on the Cats as Jordan Stubbe made the most of a rare Allen turnover, the classy Lindenow forward caught with no option coming out of defence, an errant handball opening the door for the small Bombers’ forward’ s third.

Boisdale defender, Nicoll Sandison, then worked with Daniel Stubbe through the centre of the ground to find Josh Stubbe on the lead for his fourth goal and a 31-point Bombers lead.

A late Brodie Cameron major in transition gave Lindenow something to cheer about, however they were being soundly beaten on the outside and couldn’t find an ideal match-up for either of the Stubbe brothers.

That problem continued early in the third as Jordan Stubbe booted his fourth and fifth goal within the opening four minutes of the third quarter, the first following a centering Hegarty ball and a Lindenow fumble, the second after reading a boundary throw in perfectly.

In what was a slow quarter with little scoring action, the Cats mustered one major through Bayden Ashwood, but is wasn’t enough to send a scare into Boisdale’s camp as it led by 33 at the final break.

Lindenow kicked the opening goal of the final term through Cameron, again in transition, however McKean responded following a huge mark in the goalsquare at the 10minute mark.

Bayden Ashwood had the Cats’ and his second after a high tackle, however smart snapping goals to Burgiel and Campbell twice in the space of four minutes, put the Bombers 44 points ahead.

Allen had the final say for the Cats, however the day belonged the Boisdale.

Lindenow has a second chance to advance to the grand final against Wy Yung in the preliminary final this Saturday.

In a see-sawing reserves affair, Lindenow got the better of the Bombers by 13 points.

Neither team gained the ascendancy early with Boisdale leading by eight at the first break thanks to some accurate kicking.

The Bombers dialed up the pressure in the second quarter, limiting the Cats to three behinds while kicking 2.1 to open up a threegoal buffer at half time.

Lindenow responded in the third and kicked four goals to one as an injury-hit Boisdale started to run out of legs.

The Cats continued to build on their lead in the final stanza despite the best efforts of the Bombers, who face Lucknow in the preliminary final.

Cooper Bailey and Jonty Landy both kicked two goals for Boisdale, while Dylan Wilkins and Jeremy Reid impressed.

Rodney Harrison led the way for Lindenow, while Lynden Kennedy and Jack Halabut were crucial.

Lakes Entrance’s under 17s emphatically earned a grand final berth with an 84-point victory against Orbost Snowy.

The Blues were up to the challenge early and were down by only 14 at the first change. The Seagulls took then control.

Orbost Snowy only added two behinds in the second quarter as Lakes Entrance piled on 5.1 to open up a 44-point lead.

It was a similar story in the second half as the Seagulls bagged eight goals to two and won convincingly.

Jake Lawrence booted all four of the Blues’ goals and Zane Candian and Lochlan Fisk tried hard all match.

Noah Bottom was brilliant for the Seagulls with five majors, while Kyle Ferris and Hudson Grandy found plenty of touches.

PICTURED: Small forward, Jordan Stubbe, was superb inside the attacking 50 against Lindenow on Saturday at Bairnsdale City Oval as the Bombers booked themselves an East Gippsland football grand final berth with a convincing 38-point victory.
