EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 3 WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2024 Caithness Pastoral awarded Local farming family, Caithness Pastoral Company, headed by Trevor and Carryn Caithness, of Forge Creek, have been awarded the title Beef Farmer of the Year in the Weekly Times Coles 2023 Farmer on the Year awards. Typically humble and quiet, Trevor was nonetheless pleased with the award, surprised they were chosen over the other two nominees. “It’s nice to get a bit of recognition for what our region can do,” Trevor said. The ceremony was last Friday, held in a function room at the MCG, and on accepting the award Trevor had to stand up and give a speech. “I talked a bit about our farming operation DQG WKH WHUULȴF SHRSOH ZH KDYH ZRUNLQJ with us who make the day-to-day things possible, and I also acknowledged our longterm relationship with Coles,” Trevor said. “We’ve supplied Coles for about 10 years and that’s a lot of the basis of the success of our business, the pricing stability in the supply arrangement, which means we can budget around that. “We’ve achieved capital improvements and soil work to be able to keep increasing our productivity because of it.” Trevor said the family supplied about 1000 head a year to Coles, including about 700 of their homebred cattle plus trade cattle. 7UHYRU LV DOVR WKH FKLHI H[HFXWLYH RɝFHU of the local Gippsland Ag Group and has mentored many farmers in the district. John said their cattle had repeat buyers each year, including locals and people from across Gippsland, as well as interstate. "We are really strong on breeding cattle with a quiet temperament, quality and size," John said. "It's important to choose the right bull for the right cows. "We weaned the calves on January 10 and their quiet, easy doing temperament is really obvious." The Pendergasts usually source their bulls through Karoonda Herefords over the mountains at Gelantipy. Barry and his brother Evan, trading as BC & EO Newcomen, were regular sale toppers for 34 years before they each went into partnership with their wives 30 years ago. Both have continued to R΍HU WRS FODVV DQLPDOV HYHU\ year. Barry and Topsy, trading as BC & AJ Newcomen, will weigh all 220 of their sale calves this week and post the average weight of each pen of animals on the fence DW WKH VDOH Ȃ IRU ȴYH SHQV of steers and four pens of heifers. “We always weigh each animal a week out from the sale and then run them through the race again to give them a numbered tag, corresponding to their weight. So, tag numbers 1-20 will be the heaviest animals,” Barry said. “It’s something we started doing a few years ago to give buyers as much information as we can. We post the pen average on the fence for the sale, but if any buyer is interested to know, we can provide every animal’s individual weight.” The top pen of 20-odd steers will comprise animals ranging in age from nine months to a year old and %DUU\ LV FRQȴGHQW WKH\ ZLOO all be in excess of 400kg, an extrapolation based on earlier weighings and their proven growth rates. “All the calves are by the stud sires we use in our Newcomen Herefords stud; sires selected to improve growth rates and put weight into all our animals,” Barry said. “For instance, we are selling calves by our impressive new sire Quamby Plains Quandary, who has an EBV 600 day growth weight of 141 and Yarram Storm, whose 600-day growth weight is 114. Those bulls have sons in our 21st annual bull sale on Wednesday, March 13, but they’ve also got sons in the calf sales and WKDW PHDQV WKH\ȇUH LQȵXHQFing weights right through our herd.” Barry retained a solid proportion of heifers as replacement stock, so only 90 of the FDOI R΍HULQJ DUH KHLIHUV But all the sale calves have had a good run up to the sale – they were weaned in November, put into the better paddocks and have been well-handled on horseback, with the Can-Am, bike and dogs. Like many farms in the area, pinkeye has been a source of constant concern but vigilance and treatment whenever its required means that any animal presented for sale by the Newcomens is considered to be on the mend or healed. “We’ve been right on to it,” Barry explained. “It seems to be widespread in the area this year, so we have had them in to the yards frequently, going through them and treating where it’s needed. It’s time consuming but the up-side is that they are well handled and quiet.” Bulls to be sold in the Newcomen Herefords annual bull sale will be on display at Barry and Topsy’s property Kanangra on Ensay calf sale day. The property is a few kilometres from the Ensay sale yard and on the Highway to Omeo, where the calf sales will continue in the afternoon. EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 11 WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2024 Unique mountain sales About 8500 cattle will grace the Elders Mountain Calf Sales next week, where pink shirts will line the saleyards at Omeo and Benambra, ably led by Elders Bairnsdale’s Morgan Davies. Morgan is also the main auctioneer and organiser of the two-day event, which attracts hundreds of buyers from across eastern Australia. “The Hereford calves are renowned as the best and I certainly believe that,” Morgan said. “The black spring weaners also look a picture. “It makes our jobs easier with cattle that look so good.” He said selling that many cattle in any selling centre, let alone in four sales, over two days and three saleyards, was no mean organisational feat. “We concentrate on the business transaction of cattle being presented correctly and that they go to the right homes. “The mystique of the mountain sales is unique, there is nowhere else like Omeo, Benambra and Ensay.” Morgan has attended the Mountain Calf Sales every year, as Elders send a lot of their young people to work at the sales. “I like the camaraderie of it all up there, we probably have about 35 people around us, 10 good auctioneers, 10 good cattle drafters and plenty of people on gates. “We’re also bound by the weather in that region. He spent time in Korumburra, Swan Hill, Broken Hill and Albury until the opportunity came up to go back to Gippsland. “I had no intentions of working in Bairnsdale,” Morgan said. “I was thinking more like the Koonwarra area, I was pretty young. “But there was a management change at Bairnsdale and I took on the livestock manager role when I was 21.” “It’s a great industry to be in and a great career,” he said. “I was lucky enough to learn from some great stock agents and people, like Peter MacCallum and Ian Parker, they let me take the lead which was really uncommon. “We built a substantial business, but I needed their support to get there.” He also lists agents like Brad Obst and David Hill as people he has learnt and developed a skill set from. As an auctioneer, Morgan opens the Mountain Calf Sales, and other large sales like the Yea weaner sales but he didn’t begin with that career aspiration. “I didn’t have my heart set on being an auctioneer, I was more about growing the business and our clientele, but I had to take on the role and be more serious. Morgan entered the National Young Auctioneers competition in 2011 and ran second. “It was a good learning curve, auctioneering is all part of the job,” he said. “I really enjoy it now.” Morgan grew up in Foster where his father owned the local butcher shop and a family farming operation which split, allowing Morgan to also work with his uncle and his cattle. He married Lindenow girl Jess Bulmer in 2012 and the couple has three children, Stella, 3DW HLJKW DQG +HDWK ȴYH Now 38, Morgan says his agent career hasn’t been without its challenges. Recently Morgan has taken on the Gippsland livestock manager role and has almost immediately had to deal with the closure of the Victorian Livestock Exchange in Pakenham, and GHDO ZLWK WKH VWD΍ IURP WKDW RɝFH “Urban growth just defeated it,” Morgan said. While he admits he’s not delicate with words, Morgan’s motto is ‘Trust is your currency’ and he pays special attention to his clients and the marketing of their cattle.
