| EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 2 BEEF WEEK 2024 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2024 Anthony Snow, of Snow Rural, Bengworden, with his Angus heifers, predominantly bred from AI by Landfall Summit, Murdeduke Quarterback, Chiltern Park Moe and Clunie Range Plantation. The original herd was a mob of K&J Pendergast Herefords. Great value in crunching Today it seems all but impossible to get into farming on your own, particularly starting from nothing, but for Anthony and Sarah Snow, of Snow Rural, their dream has been realised via hard work and constant planning. The couple and their three children, Charlotte, 14, James, 12, and Sam, 8, moved to East Gippsland back in 2010 when Anthony took on a role setting up a turf farm on Boundary Road in Bengworden. "I grew up working for my Dad in the turf game from a very young age," Anthony said. "I dedicated a lot of my youth to working and getting ahead, and at 30 years old I guess I was just looking for something new to challenge me and get me out of what was potentially an early mini mid-life-crisis." Along the way they transitioned into running their own cattle and cropping farm, beginning with the purchase of 25 K&J Pendergast Hereford heifers at the Mountain Calf Sales. The farm, 'Stedmoor', which was bought after Anthony literally knocked on the door of the owners to ask if they would sell, has grown to encompass 520 hectares in Bengworden and 470 breeders. He attributes his rapid rise to his one of his abilities – to sit at a desk. "I used to love driving a tractor when I was young. <RX PDNH \RXU PRQH\ LQ WKH RɝFH QRW RXW on the farm. "Having such a dedicated, hardworking, smart, and passionate bloke like Ant with us opens up so many doors, like taking on more intensive crops and grazing/feeding programs," he said. Anthony says an employee like Ant allows him to spend the time on planning and decision making "that all farm businesses so desperately need". "It's very easy to get distracted by those daily farm tasks and miss the important business opportunities." He lists those as anything from seeking out discounts on big purchases, to taking the time to attend a conference, meeting new people, or seeking out new ideas. "There's always someone out there who does it better than me," he said. "I love asking questions because if you're genuinely interested in listening to their ideas, farmers love to share their knowledge.

EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 5 BEEF WEEK 2024 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2024 Kees believe in the science Bill and Minnie Kee established Warringa Herefords at Yarram in 1991 and have been breeding Herefords for 33 years. They initially bred horned Herefords but since 2010 they have bred Poll Herefords exclusively. 7KH\ UHORFDWHG IURP <DUUDP WR 6DUVȴHOG LQ They place great emphasis on quiet temperament and sound structure - genetics are selected for the FRPPHUFLDO EHHI LQGXVWU\ SURȴW GULYHUV RI FDOYLQJ ease, growth, fertility, muscle and marbling. The Kees are great believers in the use of the various sciences available, not only to the seedstock producers but also the commercial cattle breeders. But Hayden's Real Estate owners, Bryan and Vicki Hayden, had made a calculated call. "I received two pieces of very valuable advice early in my career," Bryan said. "One was 'Don't buy the property – buy the water', and Buchan Station is a very well-watered property. Bryan followed that sage advice and has since built a reputable Angus operation, including a 500head breeding herd and several notably bred bulls, including Milwillah Renegade R1033 and more recently Milwillah Shane S23, a bull by Milwillah Napa. Buchan Station spans 2000 acres, bounded at the north by Buchan River, while the Tara and Harold Creeks join at about the centre RI WKH SURSHUW\ EHIRUH ȵRZLQJ into the Buchan, ensuring most paddocks have fresh water. "In recent times with water improvements, people have been able to hold on to their land for longer." Past owners have included the Scotts, Sam and Walter Lane, and Dr Harry Cummins. "We wanted an outstanding female line and chose to go with Milwillah Angus," Bryan said. "We're basically a pure Milwillah herd now, and that's really been very rewarding for us." Part of the business of buying quality bulls is selling their semen, which at $70 a straw, goes some way towards paying for them. The Haydens have recently sold semen from S23 as well as another older bull, Milwillah Lannister L20, who has sired some beautifully quiet females within the Buchan Station herd. EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 11 BEEF WEEK 2024 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2024 Market positivity in the air It seems there is more positivity in the atmosphere at cattle sales this year, with plenty of rain about and talk of the El Nino turning into a La Nina. The weaner sales in the Western District started in early January, with prices quoted as 10-20 cents a kilogram above the close of 2023 but still some 30 per cent below the previous January. Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) recently stated there was a "strong outlook for the start of the year ZLWK FDWWOH SULFHV OLIWLQJ VLJQLȴFDQWly over the last couple of months" with the "restocker yearling steer indicator lifting by 56¢ to 366¢/kg liveweight over the past month". "We're bouncing from the bottom up," he said "Last year was a real year for survival, especially when it got dry. &RQȴGHQFH ZDV VKRW WR SLHFHV the cattle job bottomed out and really no one knew how cheap it would get. "Feeder steers went from $5 a kilo to $4/kg in a month, then from $4 to sub-$3 in six months, and we had processors saying they weren't making any money. "The job went into free fall. "At various times it was hard WR ȴQG DQ\ YDOXH LW ZDV SURSHUO\ heavy going. "But we're through that now and the traders who kept trading also picked up the upside of picking up cheap cattle. "Abattoirs and processors are showing more interest so that's all positive. "Three or four of the major processors to come online are either killing more cattle or starting up. "I think we'll be well positioned to sell fat stock and cull cows." Just to recap, livestock prices took a dive last spring with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) predicting a long, hot dry, El Nino summer. It was dry in winter and into spring, and producers' memories of feeding through the last drought were fresh. Cattle were sent to market in droves, with oversupply one of the factors causing the market to crash. Other factors included the lack of processing capability due to labour shortages. 7KHQ FDPH EXVKȴUH DW WKH VWDUW of October, quickly followed by a deluge of rain, more than 100 millimetres in parts, extinguishing the ȴUH DQG VSDUNLQJ KRSHV RI D GHFHQW summer. Flooding became the new problem and December was wet again ZLWK ȵRRGV However, BoM will currently not agree to the talk of a La Nina and recently issued a statement saying: "… about half of the past El Niño events have included heavy rainfall events, particularly across parts of eastern Australia. "The presence of a positive Southern Annular Mode (SAM), combined with very high temperatures in the Tasman Sea, likely contributed to rainfall events in eastern Australia in December and January. "It is unusual to see a persistently positive SAM during El Nino, as that is more typical during a La Nina phase. "The widespread and regular rainfall across southeastern Australia across multiple months is similarly unusual for El Nino." The Bureau is also still predicting the El Nino will last until autumn. Hopefully prices pick up even further in time for the feature Mountain Calf Sales. "The best indicator of what weaner prices will do is the feeder steer price," Mr Davies said. "Last year it was falling, this year the market is increasing so we might see around the same prices." The summer's Feature Store Sale will take place at Bairnsdale this Thursday, January 25, starting at 9am, while the Mountain Calf Sales will take place March 5-6. Weaner sales in the Western District are showing promise, with prices higher than the close of 2023, but still below year-ago levels.
