EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 7 EDITION 2 - 2023 WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2023 Changing lives with dementia support Imagine: You’ve beaten cancer, before WUDYHOOLQJ WKH ZRUOG ZLWK \RXU VLJQLȴFDQW other of more than four decades, only to enter unchartered waters with a dementia diagnosis. That’s the story of 78-year-old Gippslander Sylvia and her husband Robert, who are supported today in their Paynesville home by the dementia and carer teams from Latrobe Community Health Service (LCHS). “Sylvia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008,” Robert said, her primary carer and eight years her senior. “After she got the all clear in 2010, we decided to travel the world – and did so until 2016.” But dementia was always in the back of Sylvia’s mind, given her mother battled Alzheimer’s – the disease that accounts for between 60 to 80 per cent of all dementia cases. “We came across a new dementia trial in 2016 that was on-boarding new patients,” Robert said. “Unfortunately we found out last year that the trial has not been a success for Sylvia. So we were referred to a neurologist, who then diagnosed her with early onset dementia. That was a devastating thing to hear.” Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. Symptoms can trigger a decline in thinking skills, also known as cognitive abiliWLHV Ȃ D΍HFWLQJ EHKDYLRXU IHHOLQJV DQG relationships. Having approached LCHS for support earlier this year, Sylvia and Rob are now successfully navigating the often-complex landscape of home care package support. “Robert was completely overwhelmed by HYHU\WKLQJ WKDW ZDV JRLQJ RQ ZKHQ Ζ ȴUVW met him,” said LCHS dementia access and support worker, Emily, who meets the couple at least once a week. “He did not fully understand the system, meaning his assessments to get support for Sylvia were being declined. “That’s all changed now. Sylvia is supported through her home care package, meaning she can spend her time at home with her husband. We’re now exploring Robert’s own home care package, which will support him even more as Sylvia’s primary carer.” “We work extremely well together as a team,” Robert said, who admits he was unaware of the support available. “It’s really changed our lives – that pressure has truly been lifted.” He even attends regular carer catch-up groups at LCHS Bairnsdale today, which provides a positive, understanding and mindful atmosphere – with a particular emphasis on wellbeing and education. “You are not alone,” Robert said. “Seek out that support because it’s there. You won’t regret it – we certainly didn’t.” Sylvia and Robert’s story comes as Dementia Australia mark Dementia Action Week (September 18-24), which encourages everyone to take a few simple actions to create a dementia-friendly future for all Australians. Maintaining mobility: Is a crucial aspect of being healthy. Our joints need regular movement to remain healthy and mobile. If you can't move your joints freely through the full range of motion, you are at an increased risk of injury. Bone density: Begins to decline after the age of 40 and accelerates around the age of 50, making older people more prone to fractures. Weight bearing exercise can help keep our bones healthy and strong and reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis and fractures. Muscle mass: Slowly decreases with age. Adults who do not exercise are said to lose 3-8 per cent of muscle mass per decade, and 5-10 per cent after the age of 50 so we need to work to maintain and/or increase our muscle mass with regular exercise. Skin cancers can be a nuisance such as a non-healing sore, but any blemish that has been present for more than a month should be looked at by a doctor. There are three types of skin cancers which are melanomas, squamous cell cancers and basal cell cancers. Fortunately, melanomas are relatively uncommon but at present there are now H΍HFWLYH WUHDWPHQWV IRU DGYDQFHG DQG GLVseminated disease. The more common squamous cell cancers and basal cell cancers can be easily removed with relatively simple surgical techniques. Basal cell cancers occur typical on the face and appear as a reddened patch of skin or in their full-blown appearance they can look like a moon crater with a pearly edge and sometimes a sore in the centre that doesn't heal. Squamous cell cancers appear like a FUXVW\ ȵDNH\ EDUQDFOH RU D EOHHGLQJ VRUH that just won't heal. They can appear on the face but can also appear anywhere on the body. There are other skin cancer types but these are rare. As a general rule all skin cancers or abnormalities on the face head and neck, feet and hands should be dealt with by a surgical specialist because of the greater risk of cosmetic issues and more importantly nerve injury which can cause long-term disability. Special areas such as around the eyes, ears, hands and feet can be challenging, but results are usually good and in most circumstances clever technical manoeuYUHV LQFOXGLQJ ORFDO VNLQ ȵDSV HQDEOH WKH problem to be remedied without discomfort and an excellent functional and cosmetic result. In virtually all situations a general anaesthetic and admission to hospital is not required and most procedures can be completed within an hour without much fuss. Many patients ask whether skin cancers can be treated by other means such as creams and ointments. The answer is yes but you need to be certain about the diagnosis which in many situations can only be ascertained by a surgical biopsy. This is where an experienced specialist FDQ PDNH WKH GL΍HUHQFH Treating skin cancers with topical agents, including freezing or other topical agents can just permit cancers to continue growLQJ DQG WKHQ ȴ[LQJ WKH SUREOHP EHFRPHV IDU PRUH GLɝFXOW DQG PD\ UHTXLUH D JUDIW The take home message is to get annoying or suspicious skin problems checked and also an annual skin check from top to toe.
