Gardening EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 5 WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2023 A garden bed lets you grow fruit, veggies and more in your own backyard, saving you money at the supermarket. To build your own garden bed at home, here's what you'll need: - Spade - Mattock - Crowbar - Sledgehammer - Circular saw - Cordless drill - Drill bits - Spirit level - Measuring tape - Carpenter's square - Pencil - Marking spray paint - String line - Batten screws - 50mm galvanised screws - Flat stake sleeper peg - Treated pine or hardwood sleepers 1. Lay out the garden bed - Lay the longest sleepers out on the grass where you want to build your garden bed. Measure the distance between the two sleepers at each end to make sure they're square. 2. Cut the end sleepers - Measure the distance between the two longest sleepers, this will be the width of the garden bed. Put a wooden sleeper on the work horses. Take the width measurement and mark out this distance on the sleeper, and use the circular saw to cut the sleeper to the right length. Repeat this step to cut the sleeper for the opposite end of the garden bed. 3. Join the sleepers together - Put the two side sleepers and the end sleeper together so they make a U-shape. Use the cordless drill to make a hole near the end of one of the side sleepers, then drill in a temporary screw. Repeat this process to join WKH RWKHU VOHHSHUV WRJHWKHU 8VH WKH URRȴQJ square to make sure the corners are square. 4. Plan the look of the garden - If there are two trees or plants you want to keep in the garden bed that are at either end of the bed, measure the distance from one tree or plant to the edge of the sleeper. Go to the other end of the bed and measure the same distance from the tree or plant and mark this spot on the grass with marking paint. 5. Measure and cut the sleepers - Use the tape measure to work out the OHQJWK RI WKH JDUGHQ EHG DQG KDOYH WKLV ȴJure. This will be the length you cut the sleepers for the sides of your garden bed. Mark the length out on your sleepers and cut them to length. You'll want to cut the sleepers to the same length so they join in the middle of the garden bed. 6. Lay sleepers down the sides of the garden bed - Remove the temporary screw you drilled to make the U-shape at one end of the garden bed. Lay two sleepers down one side. Drill a temporary screw to join the sleeper at the other end so it makes a corner. Use WKH URRȴQJ VTXDUH WR PDNH VXUH WKH FRUQHU is square. Once it's square lay the other two sleepers on the opposite side. Check all four corners are square. Use marking paint to mark the corners on the outside of the sleepers which will tell you where to dig a trench for the sleepers. 7. Remove the sleepers - Once the corners are square, remove the sleepers. 8. Remove the grass - Use a mattock to remove the grass and dig down to the required depth. The sleepers will be sunk, so make sure they're 50mm above the ground. This will make sure grass won't grow back into the garden bed. Make sure the trench is deep enough so you can also lever up the concrete slab. 9. Remove the concrete - Use a crowbar to lever up and loosen the concrete slab on all sides, then use a sledgehammer or lump hammer to break the concrete into smaller pieces. Put these in a wheelbarrow to take them away. Use the mattock to dig out the rest of the grass and dig a trench for the sleepers to sit in, so that 50mm of the sleeper sits above the ground. 10. Screw the ends of the garden bed together - Once the trench is at the right depth, start putting the ends of the garden bed together. Use batten screws to join a sleeper on each side of the garden bed to the end. Use two screws, one at the top and one at the bottom of each joint. Once you've joined both ends together, have someone help you to lift them into place. 11. Put the sleepers in place - Put the four side sleepers into place. Run a string line from one end of the garden bed to the other to make sure the sleepers are straight. Repeat this process for the sleepers on the other side. 12. Secure the sleepers with stakes - Once the sleepers are straight and at the right height, hammer in a stake to join them at the centre. Drill four galvanised screws into the stakes to join the sleepers together. Repeat this process where the sleepers join RQ WKH RWKHU VLGH %DFNȴOO WKH VRLO VR WKDW LW sits evenly in the garden bed. Gardening | EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 12 WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2023 Broccoli and carrots are primed for spring planting. Veggie garden revamp If you’re hoping to plant some fruit and veggies this spring, it’s important to know what is in season to ensure you get the best crop. Giving your veggie garden a spring tidy won’t go astray either. Begin by removing weeds, raking up leaves and pulling up spent plants. Then, apply a slow release fertiliser and gently incorporate it into the soil. FRUIT - Bananas - Cherries - Lemon - Lime - Oranges - Strawberries VEGETABLES - Broccoli - Carrot &DXOLȵRZHU - Cucumber - Onions - Spinach - Peas - Pumpkins - Zucchini The best thing about this selection of spring vegetables is that some will grow and be ready for harvest before others, so you can enjoy your leafy greens in spring and summer salads and begin harvesting your pumpkins once the ZHDWKHU HDVHV R΍ LQ DXWXPQ You can also harvest and re-plant several times during spring and summer to keep the fresh goodies coming in. Get composting Making your own compost is a natural way to fertilise your garden, save money and play your part in helping the environment. You won’t have to buy fertiliser and you can recycle kitchen scraps, garden waste and any leftover cardboard. Here’s what you’ll need: - Safety gear - Garden waste - Kitchen scraps - Organic compost - Pea straw - Tumbling bin 1. Find the right position for your compost bin - You’ll want to make sure your compost bin is in a shaded area and well drained. Too much sun will dry it out. 2. Start mixing your materials - Add organic compost and straw to the bin to get started, ensuring you have an even ratio of brown to green waste. Brown waste is high carbon material, such as paper, cardboard and straw. Green waste is high in nitroJHQ VXFK DV FR΍HH JURXQGV manure and kitchen waste. 3. Turn the tumbler weekly - Turn the tumbler bin at least once a week. Make sure you don’t put any meat products, dog or cat faeces or diseased plant material in with the compost. Once it looks like soil and smells earthy, the compost is ready to use. <RXU YHJHWDEOH KHUE JDUGHQ FDQ EHQHȴW IURP D VSULQJ FRPSRVW PDNHRYHU Creating your own compost during spring plays an important environmental role. 0408 171 470 CALL US FOR A FREE QUOTE: www.eastgippslandtreeworks.com.au QUALIFIED ARBORISTS Providing 5 star service for over 20 years.
