March Sales 2023

Supplement to the Bairnsdale Advertiser, Lakes Post & Snowy River Mail. EDITION 868 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 2023 There is a new opportunity for landowners in East Gippsland this April. Landcare and the TopSoils Project are bringing Stuart Andrews from Tarwyn Park - Natural Sequence Farming to East Gippsland. Stuart will run a four-day course near Bairnsdale from April 18 to 21 and a one-day information session in Orbost on April 17. Why, as a property owner, could you be interested? You might remember an episode of Australian Story ȴOPHG LQ WLWOHG Of Drought and Flooding Plains. It depicted farmer and horse breeder Peter Andrews and his story of repairing eroded streams to slow WKH ZDWHU ȵRZ DQG WR ȆUHK\GUDWHȇ the Australian landscape. 6WXDUW $QGUHZV LV 3HWHUȇV VRQ and the founder of Tarwyn Park Training. He has been running courses on Natural Sequence Farming (NSF) VLQFH Peter Andrews has successfully converted degraded, salt-ravaged properties into fertile, drought-resistant pastures. He believes that heavy grazing of streambed banks following EuroSHDQ VHWWOHPHQW KDV VLJQLȴFDQWO\ increased stream velocities. The result is the gouging of streambeds and the lowering of ZDWHU WDEOHV LQ ȵRRGSODLQV To combat the issue, Mr Andrews believes that a series of physical interventions or “leaky weirs” can be added in the landscape to slow WKH UDWH RI ZDWHU ȵRZ HVSHFLDOO\ after rain events, resulting in the creation of a “chain of ponds” and the restoration of the health of the streambeds and the surrounding land. “By focusing on the simplicity to manage the complexity. Natural Sequence Farming used throughout our environments can result in the rehydration of landscapes, regeneration of soils and the restoration of our ecosystems,” he said. On his property, Tarwyn Park, Peter Andrews began testing his theories on rehydrating landscapes. He reintroduced natural landscape patterns and processes as they would have existed in Australia before European settlement. These patterns included FUHDWLQJ D QDWXUDO YDOOH\ ȵRZ SDWtern by reconnecting the stream WR LWV ȵRRGSODLQ DQG QDWXUDO ORZ points and managing the succession of vegetation with nutrients and biomass harvested on the low points. EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 3 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 2023 Wattlewood Angus ready for bull sale Wattlewood Angus is in full swing preparing for its annual bull sale on Thursday, March 16. John and Fiona Glover are no strangers to the hard work that goes in behind the scenes making sure their animals are in their best health to achieve the best reproductive performance and longevity. The 30 bulls that will be included in their on-farm sale that is interfaced with AuctionsPlus have all been vaccinated with 7in1, Pastiegard and Vibrovax as well as being semen tested. These ready-for-work bulls are by renowned sires that include Baldridge Beast Mode, Chiltern Park Moe, Coonamble Hector and gone but not forgotten sire Te Mania Ada through some embryo bulls that are rising two-year-old in the sale. Wattlewood’s breeding philosophy is to have structurally correct, quiet animals that perform in a package that buyers want to and enjoy owning. While the Glovers have never concentrated on EBVs, Wattlewood has potential stud and herd sires available that are among the best in the breed for birth weight, growth, structure and carcass EBVs. When various traits are calculated, there are bulls in the 2023 sale that are top performers in every index the Angus breed has. After overwhelming interest prior to and during their Beef Week’s open day saw enquiries coming from breeders from all across South East Australia, including Tasmania, the husband and wife team believe they are on the right track with their breeding program and continue to have return buyers as well as new buyers that have heard about Wattlewood genetics from other happy Wattlewood bull owners. “We love the relationships that we have developed with our bull buying clients over the years and appreciate hearing how well the bulls are working for their new owners,” Fiona said. “It is great to get an insight to what our breeders are trying to achieve and help them accomplish this when selecting the next wave of genetics that will be used over the strong female base that we have.” For any enquiries that you may have, to request a catalogue or view the bulls that are available prior to the sale, contact Fiona (details available at the Advertiser RɝFH Wattlewood Angus has 30 bulls ready for its on-farm sale on Thursday, March 16. | EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 10 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 2023 MARCH SALESFEATURE 2023 All set at Karoonda Karoonda Hereford Stud is looking forward to its annual bull sale on Tuesday, March 21 at Karoonda Park, Gelentipy. Paul and Judi Sykes and Lynton and Lauren Hill have a rich more than 50-year history on their stud at Gelentipy. Paul, now 73, started working on the stud at 21. .DURRQGD 3DUN KHOG LWV ȴUVW on-farm sale in 1997. Karoonda Herefords' 2022 bull sale was described as its best ever - 63 of 66 bulls sold at auction for an average of $12,709 and a top of $42,000. "We were truly humbled by the result. For those who know my dad a normally quietly spoken, hard working, determined man with one (or 10) somewhat appropriate jokes, he was overwhelmed by the support we received," Lauren said at the time. While Paul admits cattle prices have dropped "around 20 per cent on last \HDU KH LV VWLOO FRQȴGHQW RI a strong sale. "It'll be a little bit tougher but we've always had good clientele that support us and I think with that we'll be hopeful of seeing a clearance," he said. "The season has been terULȴF Ζ GRQ W H[SHFW WKH SULFHV to be as high, I think they'll be down on last year's average. We saw in South Gippsland last week the average drop from about $2400 to around $1600. It has been dry down there and bit tougher, but our bulls remain genetically a bit stronger. The auction will be held on-farm with Wyndham Livestock and Nutrien East Gippsland Livestock and virtually via AuctionsPlus, with inspections at 9.30am and the sale getting underway at 1pm. Paul said the introduction of online auctions has been positive for Karoonda Herefords. "It's a good tool to have in the basket," he said. "We were forced to go that way with COVID but we'll still have our bulls go through the ring on the day. "I think it has made for a bit more competition bidding online. Some people come prior to the sale to see the bulls which can give them a better look. On the sale day it is a lot harder to see everything you need, whereas people coming prior can have a good look around and take their time. I've got a fella from Barraba (central New South Wales) coming today (Tuesday) to have a look." Karoonda Herefords' aim is to produce sound, functional and productive cattle with great temperament that can perform under commercial conditions. It is focusing on improving carcase traits: increasing marbling while maintaining EMA and yield allowing catWOH WR EH WXUQHG R΍ DW D JRRG weight for age with plenty of PHDW DQG ORZ RVVLȴFDWLRQ ΖW is also focused on the female herd being sound, fertile and productive as they are the backbone of operation.
