| EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 2 BEEF WEEK 2023 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2023 Gaining intensive practical training Business and grazing management have always EHHQ YLWDO WR WKH ȴQDQFLDO DQG HFRORJLFDO KHDOWK RI IDUPV DURXQG WKH ZRUOG This has become even more evident as farmers, growers and graziers deal with increasingly volatile weather and markets every year. One way to combat the uncertainty caused by factors outside our control is education. Through upskilling and improving our working knowledge, it's possible to grow more grass and crops using more of the free inputs available to us – namely sun, rain and ecology. "The interest in learning how to use more of what we have for free and less of what we need to pay for is gaining huge momentum," RCS advisor, facilitator, and coach, Nic Kentish, said. "We don't want to lose any gross margins per hectare. Rather, we want to gain overall production at the same time as focusing on soil health and humus production in soils to hold as much moisture as we can,” Mr Kentish said. Through courses such as the RCS Farming and *UD]LQJ IRU 3URȴW SDUWLFLpants gain intensive practical training in ecology, soil health focusing on biology, grazing systems, regenerating pastures, water cycles and drought management, cropping systems, decision-making based on meaningful data, and the essential components of SURȴWDEOH DJULEXVLQHVV management. A half-day farm visit also provides a hands-on component to the training where participants can get out into the paddock and try their hand at the practical skills of feed budgeting and pasture biology assessment. Producers are constantly looking for ways to improve production and manage the risks that come as part of working on the land. Increasingly, producers are looking for more regenerative approaches, that can reduce costs, and build healthier and more resilient landscapes and paddocks. Nic Kentish will be facilitating the RCS Farming and *UD]LQJ IRU 3URȴW 6FKRRO LQ Bairnsdale from June 14 to 20. | EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 4 BEEF WEEK 2023 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2023 Keeping it in the family The Errinundra National Park is one of Victoria’s most revered rainforests. Comprising more than 26,000 hectares, the park is centred on the Errinundra Plateau. Grazing contently in paddocks beneath the tall trees of the park, and its ancient growth forests, are 100 Poll Herefords. 7KH FDWWOH DUH WKH GHVFHQGDQWV RI WKH ȴUVW 3ROO +HUHIRUGV that arrived in Australia from England in the 1920s. The Bendoc property on which they’re grazing is owned by Joanne and Ron Flanagan, who bought the cleared land in the early years following the millennium. Mr Flanagan’s grandfather, Harry, had started breeding cattle with a Poll Hereford bull that came from the Milton Park stud at Moss Vale, in the New South Wales Southern +LJKODQGV RQH RI WKH ȴUVW WR LPSRUW IURP (QJODQG He joined the bull with Poll Hereford cows from the Merriville stud in Yass. The cows and bull travelled to Cooma by train and were then walked 38 kilometres to his property, known as Woodlands. In the spring, Harry Flanagan would rent his bulls out to local farmers on the Monaro, while in the summer, he drove the herd into the High Country for the warmer months. The tradition of droving cattle into the High Country was discontinued when snow leases were cancelled. With Joanne and Ron Flanagan now in their 70s, their daughter, Irene French, with her husband, Archie, are overseeing the Poll Herefords on the 400-acre isolated property. Their 10-year-old son, Harry, named after his great-great grandfather, rides horseback with his sister, Ella, 12, helping round the cattle up. The Frenches are about to enter into a partnership with Irene’s parents to run the Bendoc property, making young +DUU\ D ȴIWK JHQHUDWLRQ IDUPHU ‘’Mum and Dad want to lighten their workload so we are taking over the Poll Hereford tradition,’’ Mrs French said. The Frenches currently run their own Angus cows on their 900-acre property at Dellicknora, near Bonang. Mr French too comes from a farming background and is a sixth generation cattle and sheep farmer. His ancestors originally settled in the Brungle Creek area, near Gundagai, in the 1850s on the property – Bulluwayarra - which remains in the French family today. Mr French said while his ancestors originally had small dairies, they converted to beef cattle over time. His father, Tom, ran 150 Angus breeders, with Merino sheep at the family farm – Fieldon, at Brungle Creek, where Mr French grew up. “Dad was a shearer and a grazier,” Mr French said. Like the Flanagans, the French family would drove cattle in search of better feed, particularly during years of drought, often taking local farmers’ cattle along for the journey. Mr French recalls he was only 11 when he and his younger brother, Matt, accompanied their father to take 300 head of cattle and 5500 sheep through the Snowy Mountains in search of feed during the summer drought of 1982. “It got us out of school for six months,’’ he recalled of the MRE LQYROYHG LQ ORRNLQJ DIWHU D ODUJH ȵRFN DQG KHUG Mr French feels strongly about tradition and has taught his own children, Astrid, Ella and Harry, the art of droving but is disappointed they can no longer take their cattle into the High Country. “I believe farmers should be entitled to drove up there still, as long as it’s responsibly,” Mr French said. Mrs French agrees. ȊΖI WKH\ ZHUH DOORZHG WR WKH ȴUHV ZRXOGQȇW EH VR EDG ȋ VKH said. The Frenches agree they are lucky to be farming in a beautiful part of the country where the altitude is 900 metres above sea level. “The feed is generally excellent and we don’t get the extreme summers here, although the winter is a lot tougher and colder,” Mr French said. Mrs French said high rainfall ensures there is usually plenty of water for the stock, with the Bendoc River supplementing the existing dam. The stock are spoilt for choice with a plethora of large trees under which they can shelter from the rain or blazing sun. However, they concede that Bendoc’s isolation brings with it unique challenges. “We can’t just take a calf or cow into market to sell, because of the distance,” Mrs French said. Going to market involves careful planning with transport challenges and cost of fuel taken into consideration. The family generally sends their cattle to market at Wagga Wagga, in New South Wales, as opposed to Bairnsdale, which is roughly the same distance away. “We don’t like sending to Bairnsdale because they’re shut up for too many days before they’re sold,’’ Mr French said. In keeping with tradition, the Frenches are also teaching their children how to muster and care for the stock. They have their own animals, which they keep and look after. “These usually stand out as the kids prefer the colourful or horned cattle and we let them keep those animals as it makes it fun for them,” Mr French said. Irene and Archie French are entering into a partnership with Irene’s parents to run the 400 acre Bendoc property stocked with 100 Poll Herefords.
